An Invitation to Speak to the Stars

Join us for a guided introduction to the work of New Zealand Fulbright alumnus Dr. Rangi Matamua, followed by discussion, socializing and festive food sharing. Refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite dish to share. The gathering will be held rain or shine in Shelter #8 at beautiful Jenny Jump State Park.

NJ Fulbrighter Lissette “Ciclón” Olivares, an artist and linguist who will lead the discussion, explains:

Dr. Matamua’s research is based on the revitalization and regeneration of Maori astronomy. For the past 20 years, he has made a detailed search of all remaining Maori astronomical literature, entailing a Maon language-based exploration of songs, chants prayers, phrases, and proverbs that reference astronomy. This has resulted in a rediscovery of precious manuscripts and a series of interviews with Maori language and cultural experts who know traditional aspects of Maori astronomy.
