FULBRIGHT Association NEW JERSEY CHAPTER

Adventures in Finland as a Fulbright Scholar – Elves, Reindeers and Happiness
by Dr. John Donnellan

New Jersey Chapter Speaker Series Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 3:00 pm EST, via Zoom

Dr. Donnellan’s presentation will focus on Fulbright Finland and the three awards he has had over the years. Fulbright Finland is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024. Dr. Donnellan will describe the program and the various universities at which he taught. Additionally he will talk about visiting Santa Village, perhaps shedding a little light on the January schedule of all those exhausted elves as they gear up for yet another year’s labors.

Dr. Donnellan reflects that part of the fun of his research was working with the Finnish people and their unique sense of “ilo” (or joy-Finland is reported to be the happiest country in the world!) First-hand visits to the Arctic Circle offered perspectives on the sustainability of the Arctic, a topic on which he delivered lectures encompassing the Circular Economy and the Triple Bottom Line, which look at the financial, social, environmental performance of companies over time when dealing with sustainability.

Dr. John Donnellan holds the position of Associate Professor and Chair of the Management Department at the NJCU School of Business, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA. With an international teaching background, Dr. Donnellan has delivered lectures in various countries including China, England, France, Finland, and Mexico. He has lectured at such institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford Universities in the United Kingdom, as well as Columbia University in New York City.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Donnellan gained executive management experience on Wall Street, having worked at JPMorgan and Prudential Financial. This practical background in finance and management serves as a solid foundation for his research pursuits. Dr. Donnellan’s latest research focuses on the development of the ARC model in higher education, specifically addressing the internationalization of curriculum featured on NPR’s Academic Minute.
